Was Mellor Sent Packing Because of a Blunder?

Was Peter Mellor forced out at Real Salt Lake simply because Jason Kreis did not know Major League Soccer rules? Image

Real Salt Lake has been fined, in excess of $40,000, on four seperate occasions since Jason Kreis was named Head Coach.

  1. The Jeff Cassar Incident (more below) - $20,000, Tampering
  2. The white uniforms - $10,000, Failed to get league permission.
  3. Shalrie Joseph - $??,??? Tampering
  4. FC Dallas Reserve Match Cancelation - $10,000, Failed to get league permission

The Jeff Cassar incident is by far the most bizarre.

According to a source, Jeff Cassar was phoned by Jason Kreis prior to the team’s trip to Dallas recently. Not an unusual event because of the friendship between the two MLS Vets. The telephone call took on a more consequential meaning because of an alleged offer from Jason Kreis to Jeff Cassar for a “future” position as RSL goalkeeper coach.

According to the source there was an apparent misunderstanding between Kreis and Cassar in reference to the position being offered and that the actual “start date was in the future” and not an immediate job offer as was the understanding of Jeff Cassar. The consequences of that phone call led to the dismissal of Peter Mellor.

Cassar notified officials at FC Dallas of the offer and asked to be released from his contract so that he could take the job. Instead of being released he was fired. FC Dallas then notified the league of the infraction by RSL.

I hear you asking; “Why is it a problem for Mellor?”

Simply put RSL initiated contact with Cassar that was against league tampering rules. Cassar being offered the position, and accepting in good faith, through no fault of his own, was now jobless. Because of that phone call he petitioned the league for a remedy.

The league’s official action was to fine Real Salt Lake $20,000 and has awarded Real Salt Lake’s natural 2009 second round selection to FC Dallas for improper contact with a coach of an opposing team.

The League also fined FC Dallas $5,000 for not adhering to regulations regarding contact with a player of an opposing team.

That is what was made official.

Was part of the remedy to force RSL to honor the alleged job offer and immediately hire Cassar?

RSL tells the league they already have a goalkeeper coach. The league tells RSL tough luck and requires that they hire Cassar and as a result Peter Mellor becomes the odd man out and is let go.

The most frightening part is that RSL has lost more than tens of thousands of dollars which is bad enough...  but they lost a wealth of knowledge. A cache of goalkeeper and coaching experience. They lost Peter Mellor, the veteran goalkeeper coach that has trained the best goalkeepers in the history of United States Soccer. Players like Brad Friedel, Kasey Keller, Tim Howard and Marcus Hahnemann. For what? A simple lack of knowledge of league rules?

In exchange RSL gets an inexperienced and untried, Jeff Cassar.

Am I the only person that is starting to see a disturbing trend toward mortgaging the future of RSL on baubles and shiny beads?

Where were Kreis' advisors when these decisions were being made? Did he even seek advice?

Where was RSL's technical director when all of these mistakes were being made?

When contacted for comment Real Salt Lake re-iterated the official MLS statement and offered no further comment.

Bravo.

So, what was this white uniform thing? I must've missed that article. Anyone have a link?

The white uniform thing? Coach Kreis abandoned the red and blue home kit but did not get permission from the league first. I don't know if the league will force RSL to use the home kit or let the fine stand and allow RSL to continue with white kit only.
In a league/team strapped for cash I really don't see the logic in cutting back on the number of jerseys available and abandoning the revenue stream that they created.

Thanks. I knew about the switch to the white jerseys, of course, but didn't hear that MLS fined them for the switch. It might have happened during my two weeks of nonstop work out of town. You wouldn't think the league would be so uptight since they've really only done it for one home game.

I guess we'll find out a week from Thursday (or maybe this week, but league rules don't apply) whether we have to keep the home kit or not.

We'll still need the old home jersey for when we play the Red Bulls and any other team I'm not thinking of that wears white at home. If we inverted home and away, we'd still wear white most of the away games to avoid conflict.

To be fair I think we got some magic beans along with the baubles and shiny beads. The hits just keep on coming. Thanks for the article.

One key piece to remember is that the league does not publish their rules. So you don't know you've broken any rules until they tell you.

It's kind of like being on double secret probation.

That may be the case for the general public and soccer fans but I find it difficult to believe that MLS does not provide its rules to each of its teams.

There are 13 teams in this league that have signed up to play soccer, I would be extremely suspect of the league if it did not provide a set of rules that each team has access to.

Several multi-million dollar owner/investors that would not go to the toilet without the rules being spelled out and agreed upon. So I doubt any one of those owner/investors would agree to rules if they did not know them. Or at the very least their team and attorneys had access to.

Is this Shakespeare? Everything with this team is a tradegy. What a drag.

So I wonder if people wopuld be complaining about Jason's actions if we were winning. Do I see the "begining of the end" of fan support for Jason?!?!? Not that I don't agree, I am just remarking that I see the turning of the tide here.

I'm thinking that Kreis and Cassar must've talked $$. I mean, I sure wouldn't give notice if I didn't have a firm offer with the compensation ironed out. If that was discussed, then how far "in the future" was he talking about? The compensation part comes at the time of the offer otherwise, "in the future" could change the price. Right?

Sounds fishy to me.

How good of friends are they? Jason offers him a job, gets him fired, then backs out and says he never really did it?!?!?

RSL should be a soap opera. I mean really? What the heck are people thinking up there? Oh thats right...no ones thinking cause we dont have Pastorino anymore. I never like Jason as a player. When he was named coach I was not happy but decided to give him a chance. He lost that the second he got rid of Cunny. Next...!
