AYL Climbers and Sliders: Week 9
Jacob Hart
Wednesday, 28 May 2008

Could there be a shakeup at the top this week?  How about the bottom?  Here's what our contributors think:

1. Chicago Fire. Previous Ranking: #2.  Blanco has a hand in four of the five goals.  Great DP signing. - Enger

2. New England Revolution. Previous Ranking: #3.  Steve and New England don't need a DP.  Great non-DP signing. - Enger

3. Columbus Crew. Previous Ranking: #1.  Giving up goals (and points) with 5 minutes to play is the hallmark of the league's worst teams, not the best. - Horton

4. Los Angeles Galaxy. Previous Ranking: #7.  They've scored eight goals in their last two matches.  I'll say they are climbing. - Hart

5. Kansas City Wizards. Previous Ranking: #4.  Kevin Hartman: If you're going to come into the attacking third, at least make an effort to get back to goal when your team turns it over. - Horton

6. New York Red Bulls. Previous Ranking: #5.  The attack was AWOL, now the defense has joined them. - Hart

7. Toronto FC. Previous Ranking: #8.  Once they learn to win on the road, they will be a team to be reckoned with. - Enger

8. Colorado Rapids. Previous Ranking: #6.  They have not been the dominant force in Commerce that they should be. - Hart

9. FC Dallas. Previous Ranking: #10.  A home win against a bad opponent, but at least the ship is righted for one week. - Horton

10. Chivas USA. Previous Ranking: #11.  Don't look now but the Goats are coming back to life. - Hart

11. Houston Dynamo. Previous Ranking: #9.  Losing to San Jose is like losing at home to TFC in their first year... oh yeah. - Enger

12. San Jose Earthquakes. Previous Ranking: #14.  The defense really is decent, now they just need to score more than six goals in eight games. - Hart

13. DC United. Previous Ranking: #13.  I think once they got rid of the three stripes across their chest, they also lost their identity. - Enger

14. Real Salt Lake. Previous Ranking: #12.  A silver lining for RSL fans: RSL is (amazingly) one of only two MLS teams who are undefeated at home. - Horton

Biggest Climber: Los Angeles Galaxy (3 spots)

Biggest Slider: Columbus Crew, Colorado Rapids, and Real Salt Lake (2 spots)

Of Note: Despite back-to-back wins, Chivas USA remains in the double-digit zone.  The Eastern Conference still rules, claiming six of the top seven spots.  The pillow-fight of the week will be #12 San Jose at #14 Real Salt Lake.  The top-ranked Chicago Fire will not have the chance to defend their spot, as they have the week off.
